52-Year-Old Woman Killed in I-26 Shooting; Suspect Arrested After Standoff

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly interstate shooting Monday as 52-year-old Rose Kewlani of West Columbia, according to Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece.

The incident happened near Exit 82 on Interstate 26, where investigators say Kewlani was fatally shot by 45-year-old Wilfrido George Luna. After the shooting, Luna attempted to flee by crossing both lanes of the highway and allegedly tried to carjack a tractor-trailer before running toward the Mid-Carolina Country Club.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster emphasized that the truck driver was not involved in the crime, noting that Luna had only flagged him down during his escape attempt.

Deputies and responding officers located Luna in the parking lot of the country club, where he was apprehended following a brief standoff. He has since been charged with murder.

During the incident, staff at the Mid-Carolina Golf Course activated emergency protocols. General Manager Scott Crouch said workers used airhorns and golf carts to quickly alert golfers and usher them into safe areas, including the clubhouse and maintenance shop.

As a precaution, the School District of Newberry County placed multiple schools on lockdown. Mid-Carolina High and Mid-Carolina Middle School were temporarily secured, while Little Mountain, Pomaria-Garmany, and Prosperity-Rikard elementary schools were placed in “Secure Mode.” District officials later confirmed that all students and staff were safe, and schools returned to normal operations.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine what led to the fatal shooting.
