SYDNEY — Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in Sydney’s west as 22-year-old Osama Momani, who died after being gunned down in Winston Hills on Tuesday evening.
Detectives said Momani was seated in the front passenger seat of a car when he was struck by a single gunshot to the chest around 7 p.m. He reportedly stumbled from the vehicle in search of help, collapsing on Regiment Grove before residents alerted emergency services. Despite being rushed to Westmead Hospital, he could not be saved.
Photographs from the scene showed blood on the front door of a nearby home, underscoring the desperate attempts Momani made to reach safety. A light-colored sedan with a shattered passenger window was also found nearby, believed to be the vehicle he was shot in. Police confirmed a second occupant of the car was unharmed and is assisting investigators.
Superintendent Barry Vincent of Parramatta Police said it remains unclear why Momani was in the neighborhood, noting that “initial investigations suggest he attended that location from outside the local area.”
Later that night, emergency services responded to a car fire in Old Toongabbie, roughly five kilometers from the shooting scene. Authorities believe the incidents are connected.
Momani was awaiting trial on serious charges linked to a violent home invasion in 2023, and police confirmed his criminal history will be examined as part of the investigation.
The killing comes just two days after 39-year-old father Gilbert Shino was shot dead outside a Sydney pub, raising concerns over escalating gun violence in the city. While investigators have not linked the two shootings, both incidents remain under active investigation by Strike Force Karlgain.
