Phoenix High School Stabbing: One Student Killed, Maryvale HS Placed on Lockdown


A violent altercation between two male students at Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Arizona, ended in tragedy Tuesday morning, August 19, 2025, when one student was fatally stabbed and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m., prompting an immediate lockdown of the school and a swift response from local law enforcement.

Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Zak confirmed that officers were dispatched following reports of a stabbing on campus. Upon arrival, they discovered that the confrontation had escalated into a deadly attack.

Both students were transported to a nearby hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The surviving student is expected to recover. Authorities have not released the names of those involved, and the motive behind the fight remains unclear.

Tom Horne, Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, issued a statement calling the incident a “terrible tragedy” and emphasizing the need for schools to remain safe spaces for learning and growth. “Schools must be safe places,” Horne said, echoing the concerns of parents and educators shaken by the violence.

Maryvale High School, which serves approximately 2,850 students in grades nine through twelve, offers a range of specialty programs including R.O.T.C., mariachi, digital photography, and creative writing. Officials from the Phoenix Union High School District have not yet commented publicly on the incident.

As the investigation continues, grief counselors are expected to be made available to students and staff. The community is grappling with the loss and searching for answers in the wake of a tragedy that has reignited conversations about school safety, conflict resolution, and mental health support for youth.
